Wahweap Hoodoos

Wahweap Hoodoos: Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument

We met David outside Big Water before sunrise to start our hike through the Wahweap Wash. On the hike, we visited two coves of white hoodoos, with the second cove having the famous “Towers of Silence” hoodoo, where we spent a lot of time photographing the white stone objects.

Our group was awed by the prehistoric beauty of the white hoodoos. The cap of the hoodoo is Dakota Sandstone, which was a beach of an incoming seaway. It is 100 million years old, and the post of the hoodoos is Entrada Sandstone, which is 160 million years old.

The hike was 9.2 miles, and we spent 5 hours total round trip in the Wahweap Wash. The good thing for us was that there was no rain the night before, so the Wahweap Wash was pretty dry.

Our group enjoyed the hike and the photographic opportunities presented to us that morning. The next time I’m in the Page, Arizona area, I will hike to the white hoodoos again. It’s that spectacular, indeed.
